Obviously VVS is the most curable disease in the world now that Polio has been eradicated, but !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! got me thinking about the orientation of our phone for GPS purposes.
Does oppo prefer portrait or landscape for displaying the GPS?
Personally I feel like vertical gives me more of a view ahead. It used to not matter but since I updated to ios 8 I lost app compatibility with my App Radio 3.

Always landscape.

Lanscape.
As far as video goes, why has no one invented a camera phone (or maybe they have, just guessing they have not) that by default always films in landscape mode no matter the camera orientation?

When I use Waze, I always go horizontal. I don't know why but I prefer it that way.

I use my phone in portrait mode for navigation. I’m not traveling sideways.

My gps is vertical, but it’s all business.

Portrait — it fits better on the driver’s window (which is where I keep it. Try it some time. Just don’t forget to remove it before you roll down the window. So much better than the windshield or center dash)
But it really depends on your map orientation. If you like to set it in “follow the car” mode, portrait is far superior. But if you’re more of a traditional “North is North” guy like me, it could go either way.
I think the edge goes to portrait across all scenarios, at least for sub-5” phones. A bigger screen opens more possibilities.

so much this. like I have the option to take pictures in panoramic or square, but I can’t just take video in landscape while holding my phone vertically?

that opens up the discussion for a left to right video game style gps system... there’s money to be had in millennials nostalgia

Portrait, otherwise my screen is too dim to read whilst I have my sunglasses on.

I leave mine vertical, because there are a lot of audio apps that don’t work horizontal so I keep my mount setup for vertical. I do occasionally use horizontal on a long trip, and I like it better that way.

It’s actually a pretty big deal - even OEM radio displays can disappear from the polarization!

I use it vertically but that choice is guided by the tiny space I put it in next to the A pillar.

The most important thing in map/gps usage isn’t the direction of the screen, but the direction of NORTH.
Big battle in our household, my wife turns the map to the direction she’s going. I want it LOCKED IN so North is always up. That way you always know which direction you’re looking or moving.

If I’m filming something vertical, like a rock climber or rocket launch, I could see wanting to intentionally film vertically. My question is why YouTube and Vimeo haven’t devised a non-letterboxed way to show those videos.
Everyone wins? The whole concept of aspect ratio (4:3 or 16:9 etc) is based on TV and cinema, and loosely based on the field of human vision, but there are plenty of cases where I’d like vertical.
But yeah, most people still screw it up. 99% of videos should be landscape.

I hope there comes a day when I can get out of a speeding ticket because I couldn’t see my dash because I need my polarized sunglasses. Like seriously I can’t stand non-polarized.

you know, now that I have a phone with a big enough screen, I realize portrait video isn’t bad, it just needs viewing on a phone.

I don’t think it matters, since Google Maps’s default zoom is *way* too close, and it doesn’t let me zoom out.
If I’m going to be on the same stretch of road for 20 miles, it doesn’t do me any good to only see the half mile ahead and behind.

Yeah I don’t like the USB direct interface at all, so I use bluetooth audio and control it myself. Mylink sucks! It spends hours indexing my phone (not necessary, the phone has already indexed itself thank you), and starts playing my music in some randomly chosen alphabetical order, and ignores the last audio app I had been using (Downcast), and when Waze has an audio instruction it’s an “incoming call”... duh?! So I won’t plug into the USB port anymore. I have my own USB charger (that’s higher amperage anyway, 2.1 vs 0.5) and stick to bluetooth audio. In my old car I use a cassette adapter to the headphone jack and a bluetooth earpiece.

For city driving I prefer Portrait, because I can see better what’s up ahead. But when I’m traveling, I like to use Horizontal because it feels better.

I find myself doing the exact same thing. I think horizontal on the highway feels better because it likely takes up less of your field of vision

I don’t really have an option...
Sarcasm aside...If I’m walking around using Maps on my phone, I go vertical because that’s just how I pull it out of my pocket. Hadn’t put much thought into it but I suppose it does also give me a better view of what’s ahead versus horizontal.
